Evaluation of nitrogen isotopes as indicators of nitrate contamination sources in an agricultural watershed

چکیده

Determining the relative contributions of nitrate contamination in agricultural watersheds characterized by applications of both mineral and animal waste nitrogen to fields is important in evaluating the environmental consequences of these practices. Here, the use of nitrate–nitrogen (NO3−–N) stable isotopes to identify contaminant sources was examined in surface waters of an agricultural watershed to investigate whether NO3−–δ15N fractionation processes obscure source signatures. This study was conducted in a 500 ha headwater agricultural watershed within the St. Lawrence lowlands where fertilization with mineral N and hog manure is a common practice. Sampling within the watershed was designed to monitor NO3− concentrations and δ15N temporal trends at a series of locations that allowed evaluation of water flowing in watershed streams and entering these streams via different hydrological pathways. This required analysis of stream water, tile drain water, and streamside water transported through the soil matrix. These data demonstrated that NO3−–δ15N values often exceeded the maximum δ15N source of approximately +12.5‰ that was associated with hog manure in the watershed. The δ15N values and NO3− concentrations during such periods were consistent with a pattern of denitrification between precipitation events within the watershed, with values repeatedly exceeding +15‰ in tile drain and stream samples during extended periods with little rainfall. Tile drain NO3− concentrations were consistently elevated (4–38 mg l−1 N) relative to streamside soil and shallow groundwater exiting the same field (0.013–0.812 mg l−1 N). These data suggest that NO3−–N stable isotopes cannot be used as contaminant source indicators in the surface waters of this watershed between precipitation events, and that further evaluation of their use during storm events is required. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Using Dual Isotopes and a Bayesian Isotope Mixing Model to Evaluate Nitrate Sources of Surface Water in a Drinking Water Source Watershed, East China

A high concentration of nitrate (NO3) in surface water threatens aquatic systems and human health. Revealing nitrate characteristics and identifying its sources are fundamental to making effective water management strategies. However, nitrate sources in multi-tributaries and mix land use watersheds remain unclear. In this study, based on 20 surface water sampling sites for more than two years’ ...

Discriminating Sources and Flowpaths of Anthropogenic Nitrogen Discharges to Florida Springs, Streams and Lakes

Surface discharges of anthropogenic nutrients historically have been the focus of Florida’s waterquality regulations. Groundwater contributions to eutrophication of Florida’s surface waters are a more recent focus. Florida’s naturally oligotrophic springs, streams, and lakes are experiencing significant anthropogenic nutrient contamination resulting from groundwater discharges with elevated nit...

Nitrate distributions and source identification in the Abbotsford-Sumas Aquifer, northwestern Washington State.

The Abbotsford-Sumas Aquifer is a shallow, predominantly unconfined aquifer that spans regions in southwestern British Columbia, Canada and northwestern Washington, USA. The aquifer is prone to nitrate contamination because of extensive regional agricultural practices. A 22-month ground water nitrate assessment was performed in a 10-km2 study area adjacent to the international boundary in north...

Tracing the Nitrate Sources of the Yili River in the Taihu Lake Watershed: A Dual Isotope Approach

As the third largest freshwater lake in China, Taihu Lake has experienced severe cyanobacterial blooms and associated water quality degradation in recent decades, threatening the human health and sustainable development of cities in the watershed. The Yili River is a main river of Taihu Lake, contributing about 30% of the total nitrogen load entering the lake. Tracing the nitrate sources of Yil...
